Our Focus

SPHERE Coalition members are committed to advociating for change to help women achieve optimal sexual and reproductive health.

Improving contraceptive access

We strive to broaden access to contraception through initiatives such as:

  • Offering long-acting reversible contraceptive (LARC) insertions.
  • Extending the use of LARCs.
  • Advocating for over-the-counter access to emergency contraception and other contraceptive methods.
  • Promoting task-sharing and nurse-led models for contraceptive provision.
  • Providing evidence to facilitate online access to contraceptive services.
  • Pushing for free contraception in hospitals, including early post-natal LARC insertion.
  • Expanding contraceptive options, such as self-administered Depo Provera and desogestrel progestogen-only pills.

Removing barriers to abortion services

We work to eliminate obstacles to accessing abortion services by addressing issues such as:

  • TGA restrictions on MS-2 Step and mandatory requirements in abortion protocols.
  • Advocacy to classify medical and surgical abortion as essential services.
  • Addressing travel restrictions and ensuring access to care for all women.
  • Increasing the number of medical abortion providers in primary healthcare settings and public hospitals.

Addressing general sexual and reproductive health concerns

We focus on various aspects of sexual and reproductive health, including:

  • Ensuring adequate Personal Protective Equipment for sexual and reproductive health care delivery.
  • Tailoring access to contraception and abortion for specific groups such as Indigenous women, those from CALD backgrounds, young women, survivors of family violence, women in regional and remote areas, those
  • without permanent residency, and women facing financial difficulties.
  • Addressing workforce training needs to enhance contraception and medical abortion provision in primary care.

Our collaborative approach

The Coalition brings together a multidisciplinary team dedicated to gathering, synthesising, and disseminating evidence-informed policy briefs, practice recommendations, consensus statements, and public letters. Together, we advocate for better health outcomes for all Australian women.
